Firefighters used a power saw and a pair of bolt cutters to cut through a fence and free the animal from the water onto dry land.  The horse was very exhausted, and was unable to move.  A vet was called and he said we should pull the pony up the bank using ropes and a quad bike, even though it was very risky and the pony may have died as a result.  It was unanimously agreed between the owners, the vet and the firefighters, that it was the best option, as leaving the animal overnight in muddy wet conditions had it's own risks, from hypothermia and shock.

The animal was rescued and dragged to a field after about 3 hours, deeply distressed, shocked and exhausted.  The pony was covered in hay and straw and blankets, made comfortable and given food and water.  Firefighters and the vet left the scene, and left the owners to care for the pony overnight.

The rescue was very difficult, and made worse by a very heavy rain storm, which turned the area into a muddy bog.

The animal has since died.
