> Callsigns
Call signs are used to communicate with
fire control and other appliances by radio, and are also used to
mobilise appliances via the turnout system.
Every fire appliance in Hereford and
Worcester has it's own call sign, currently made up of two digits to identify the
station that it is from, and a single digit to identify the type of
appliance it is. Equipment that is towed is prefixed with a letter and "new dimensions" vehicles
(appliances supplied by government) have their own style call
signs. These can all be seen in the table
below.
National Call Sign Project.
There is currently a national project
underway to
introduce a new national digital radio and data system, which requires
every fire service vehicle in the country to have a unique call sign in the same format.
Call signs in fire
services across the country will be changing in the near future, with
some services, eg.Shropshire, already using the new call signs. Services
that use letters to identify stations, need to change to numbers.
The new call sign system is a seven
character system, made up of emergency service, region, county, station,
appliance type and number.

Role
Characters :

The new call signs will mainly be used to
transmit data via a data system and only rarely will be used to
speak via radio. When used to transmit a voice message, the call
signs may be shortened when used within own service area.
