Us > Our Role
Firefighters can be called upon for a wide range of incidents; just a few of the types of incident that firefighters attend include fires in commercial premises, house fires; road traffic collisions, aircraft incidents; railway incidents, animal rescues; car fires, hazardous materials; terrorism incidents, chimney fires; and fires involving fields, grass and trees. In addition to these core activities, the role of a firefighter includes delivering fire safety advice to the local community. This is mainly achieved by visiting peoples homes, fitting smoke alarms and giving advice; visiting schools, and visiting other local groups. The fire and rescue service is responsible for preventing fires through enforcing fire regulations, so firefighters will visit peoples workplaces to ensure that they are safe. These visits can also be beneficial, in that firefighters can familiarise themselves with buildings and risks in case of a fire occurring. Firefighters take part in many charity events. Look at any fire station notice board and you are very likely to see at least one charity poster. Some of the charities that Tenbury firefighters have supported are the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, the NSPCC; Age Concern, local schools; and the local hospital. When not taking part in these charity events, firefighters are likely to be seen at many local fetes or taking part in annual remembrance parades. The very nature of the job leads to a very closely knit team; saving lives, improving safety and out meeting the community. The job can be physically and emotionally demanding, but it always delivers a great deal of pride and satisfaction. |
